Following a Government announcement that local councils in England are to receive a near £6 billion fund to fix the UK’s pothole problem over the next six years, Ministers are warning that this will not be enough.
It seems we have more Potholes than ever before. With the recent hard winters and severe flooding, and despite constant patching quick fixes, it has still left many local councils with a backlog of road repairs.
Driving over potholes is a major cause of wheel misalignment, which can reduce vehicle safety, increase fuel costs plus poor vehicle handling, causing distraction and concern for drivers. According to the website potholes.co.uk, potholes are estimated to cause as many as 1 in 10 mechanical failures on UK roads and cost motorists an estimated £730 million every year.
Kathryn Beaurain from AlignMyCar confirms: “Hitting a pothole can dramatically alter a car’s alignment. Minor damage can be unseen but the impact is huge. Indeed, when a car is misaligned its effects include reduced tyre life , higher fuel consumption and increased emissions because the car is fighting against the increased rolling resistance making the engine work harder. It can also cause the car to pull to the left and the right which potentially makes for unsafe handling.”
However, a fast and accurate full four wheel alignment check can identify any misalignment issues in a matter of minutes, helping to return the car to its original manufacturer specification.
